Bananas!

The metal cart rattles while turning into the cereal aisle. Here comes the sun…*ba-na-nas!* “Mom! Shhh...listen. I swear I just heard someone whisper *bananas* over the store Muzak!” Her brow raises skeptically. We stand and stare at the cornflakes while listening carefully. You can dance…*ba-na-nas!* “I heard it!” she confirms. “Faint but clear as day!” *ba-na-nas!* We look at each other wide-eyed. A tired mom with a grubby toddler passes us. Bananas are in her carriage. Bananas are in every carriage. We laugh as we place ours on the belt at check-out. “This is bananas!” she cries.

Leanne Schild is currently living her fourth life in Germany. But her heart lies in Salem, Mass., where she plans to return in her fifth life.
