I was wearing a dress and my favorite silver jewelry. Most of the night he avoided me, speaking to me only one time, asking if I wanted a beer. I felt impatient and rejected. I took a deep breath and blurted, “What’s going on? Why are you avoiding me?” I knew why, I just needed to be put out of my misery. He hesitated. “It’s just … you’re just not my type,” he said. My heartbeat began to slow and I felt my frustration drop out from under me, leaving me with a kind of space that felt like freedom.
