Turn

The crowd of four-year-olds rushed and shouted behind the placid teacher. "Allez, Allez!" Boys tossed clumps of wet leaves in the air, exuberant. Sunlight glowed over the field of sunflowers behind them. Sunlight filtered through the last of the brown oak leaves, falling, falling. And one little girl at her very own pace, far behind them all. Her pink fairy princess dress floated over her thick purple sweatsuit as she danced her hands slowly. Her eyes lost in a dreamy gaze skyward until they locked on mine. I turned back for one last, lingering look and she, magically, turned too.
