Departure

The first time she left she walked out into the night without a coat, but returned within a few hours and it was as if it had never happened. The next time, months later, was as abrupt, but this time she took me with her. There was barely a chance to throw on the clothes I’d set out to wear the next morning and grab my backpack of books. She said that our dog, Whiskey, couldn’t come with us yet. Just us two, back into the darkness, never again to see the inside of the house where I grew up.
