Nakumatt ’14

I inch our ancient Toyota through a police checkpoint into the parking lot, open all doors and the boot, while sniffing dogs strain against their leashes. Standing at the store entrance next to the giant bronze elephant that represents Nakumatt’s trademark, the kids and I are wanded, frisked, by an officer. I purchase eggs and tortilla chips my friend’s company manufactures. My kids stay close as they choose treats from the candy aisle. My middle child asks for something salty, we stick together towards the crisps. It’s been over a year since four masked gunmen opened fire, killing 71 people.
