Roadkill

At first I thought it was a burlap bag left on the road by workers; summer is the only feasible time frame in Michigan for construction. The fawn took up most of the bike lane. The front wheel of my bicycle slanted towards its head until I adjusted my course. Flies buzzed around its nostrils; it stared unseeing at the sky. I slowed down, wondering if I should stop and acknowledge its loss. No time, no time; behind me, I heard the telltale sound of an oncoming car. I threw my weight onto my pedals and left the fawn behind.
